HOW IT WORKS

We recycle 90% of the organic
waste we receive into:

Biogas

Organic waste is trucked into the facility and mixed with “starter” compost to begin the process.

The mix is spread across the sealed anaerobic digester (AD) tunnels where it breaks down over several weeks producing biogas.

Next, the biogas is moved into an updrader, where it is washed, compressed and converted into natural gas.

The finished byproduct, natural gas is then moved to a natural gas grid where it is used to power the city’s waste collection fleet.

The waste material from the AD tunnels is then moved into composting tunnels where forced air kick starts the biological process to create compost.

The finished compost is screened to remove contaminants and transported off-site where its packaged as fertilizer.

All air used in the process passes through an odour abatement system including an ammonia scrubber, bio!lter system and bio-scrubber. Clean air and water vapour evaporate from the stack.

Upon arrival a shredder tears open the bags to access organics and shreds plastic into long thing strips.

The mix is spread across composting tunnels for 14 days. Forced air kick-starts the biological process where temperatures reach 55° or higher, killing harmful bacteria.

Next, the mix is processed through a screening line, to remove contaminants and heavy solids; separating out the compost.

After maturing for 21 days, the compost is then tested by a third-party lab before it is sold to area farmers as fertilizer for agricultural crops.

All air used in the process passes through an odour abatement system including an ammonia scrubber, bio!lter system and bio-scrubber. Clean air and water vapour evaporate from the stack.

Our Facilities

London

The London composting facility, located in the province of Ontario, was our !rst plant in Canada. It is located between Toronto and Windsor and includes technology designed to process organic waste containing little to no garden waste. The local authorities, in close collaboration with us, launched an organic waste collection program which primarily consists of kitchen waste and diapers. This waste is collected in plastic bags.

The odour abatement system used at this facility has been specially designed to process organic waste in plastic bags with little to no carbon source.

Ottawa

Our composting facility has been processing organic waste for the City of Ottawa since 2010, which is converted into high quality compost for the agricultural sector and for the City itself. The facility can also operate during the harsh Canadian winters without issues. The plant has a processing capacity of 100,000 tons of organic waste per year with potential for expansion to 150,000 tons per year.

One of the things that makes this location unique is the fact that there are hardly any odours released. This has been achieved by making sure the building and the facility is constantly under negative pressure as this prevents the emission of odour and particles into the surrounding area. Part of the air is used as process air in the composting tunnels. The air is then passed through a multi-step odour abatement system to remove odours before they are emitted via a stack.

Surrey

The Surrey Biofuel Facility became fully operational in the City of Surrey, part of the Metro Vancouver area earlier this year. This facility creates the first fully integrated closed-loop organics waste management system in
Canada.

The facility is the largest of its kind in North America with the capacity to process 100% of the City’s organic waste over the 25-year contract term, along with commercial organic waste. It will signi!cantly contribute to Metro Vancouver achieving its regional 70% waste diversion target and will be instrumental in reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions will reduce by approximately 49,000 tonnes per year, which is the equivalent of taking over 10,000 cars o# the road annually, eliminating the City’s corporate carbon footprint.

The facility can process up to 115,000 tonnes of organic waste every year. It will convert the City’s kitchen and garden waste, along with commercial waste from across the region, into renewable biomethane gas. The biomethane gas will be used to fuel the City’s “eet of natural gas powered waste collection trucks. The facility will also produce a compost product that will be suitable for landscaping and agricultural applications.

Nanaimo

After recently securing a 20-year contract with the Regional District of Nanaimo to process all of the region’s organics, the Nanaimo facility, is currently undergoing an in-depth retro!t to implement advanced composting and odour abatement systems. This will allow the facility to process all types of organic waste, while improving compost quality and odour abatement capacity. Our goal is to improve all aspects of the plant’s performance.

The facility will be upgrades using four in-vessel composting vessels and air humidi!cation and bio!lter capacity for odour abatement. The plant will have a future capacity of over 40,000 tonnes per year with the ability to process food, left and yard, co-mingled and !sh waste.
